CVHS Counsellor - Updated: Open Until a Suitable Candidate is Found

The Comox Valley Hospice Society (CVHS) eases the journey of dying and grieving for folks in the Comox Valley. We are looking for a caring, compassionate individual with experience as a palliative counsellor to join our team.

The CVHS Counsellor position is a regular part-time position working 30-hours per week, typically worked over four days a week. Occasionally, the CVHS Counsellor may be asked to work additional hours which are flexed.

This position reports to the Program Coordinator of the Comox Valley Hospice Society.

The CVHS Counsellor:

  • Assesses client appropriateness and readiness for palliative, bereavement and/or anticipatory grief counselling services;
  • Supports and/or counsels CVHS palliative clients in a variety of locations: e.g. Home, Hospital, Hospice at The Views (H@TV), CVHS office, etc.;
  • Liaises and collaborates with other health care professionals and palliative care providers to address/problem solve client care issues;
  • Where appropriate, initiates referrals to other community and/or health services.

CVHS programs are provided in our community office, at the community hospice, at the district hospital and in community. The part-time staff of nine is complemented by over 80 active volunteers who form part of the client-care team.

The successful applicant will have a Master’s Degree in counselling or a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) with a focus on counselling AND a minimum of two years’ palliative and bereavement counselling experience. An equivalent combination of education/training and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will have strong organizational, interpersonal skills and comprehensive knowledge of hospice/palliative care in British Columbia. The CVHS Counsellor understands the importance of volunteers to the delivery of hospice palliative care.
