Bruce Muir – Director

Bruce Muir joined the board of the Comox Valley Hospice Society in September 2022.

Bruce was adopted and grew up in Brantford Ontario. He quit school at 16, was married at 17 (the marriage lasted twenty years), and had a daughter – the wonderful Trisha – two weeks after his 18th birthday.

Bruce joined the military in 1979, and enjoyed 16 years of service as a physical education and recreation instructor. He entered residential treatment for drugs and alcohol in early 1990, and has enjoyed decades of recovery since.

In 1991, Bruce entered the University of Manitoba as a mature student, and over the next fifteen years would earn his BA, BSW, MA and an advanced diploma in Existential Analysis. He spent 25 years as a registered social worker and family therapist before retiring in 2020.

Bruce’s second wife, Bobbi, was posted to the Comox Valley in 1994, and they made the Comox Valley our home. Bobbi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, and she died via MAID in May of 2020 after that cancer metastasized throughout her body. Bruce misses her deeply.

Bruce loves being fit and healthy. He enjoys participating in musical theatre and choir. He reads a few books per week and has amazing friends and family.

Bruce’s clinical skills, and his value of putting in more than he takes out makes Hospice a good fit. Bruce is also on the Board of the Comox Valley Children/Youth Choir.

Death is every bit as important as all the rest of life’s developmental stages, and Bruce would like to contribute both to the dialogue and practice of Hospice.

Fun Fact: In 2015, Bruce presented an academic paper in the Great Hall in Westminster Abbey. The lost, addicted, high school dropout never saw that one coming.

Peace Out.
